How to Carry Numbers

How To Carry Whole Numbers In Addition

The following examples illustrate how to carry.

The problem 16 + 8 requires
the learner to carry a 1 (really, it’s a 10) from the right column

(ones) to the top of the left column (tens). This example illustrates:

16
+8

First, add the right column
of numbers 6 + 8 and write just the 4 down under the right column (ones) as
shown below and place the 1 (remember, it’s really a 10) ABOVE the
1 in the left column (tens):

(1)
16
+8
4

Now add the 1’s (again, you’re
adding 10s here) from the left column (tens) together for a sum of 2 and write
that to the left of the 4 for the sum of 24 as follows:

(1)
16
+8
24

Wasn’t that easy? Here, try
another…..

67
+48

For the above problem, first
add the 7+8 together for 15 and write the 5 under the 8 in the ones column as
shown below. Then, CARRY the 1 above the 6 into the tens column. Now, add 1+
6 + 4 together and write the sum 11 under the 4 as shown below. Be sure to put
the extra 1 to the LEFT of the other 1 so the sum reads 115.

+48
115

Easy!
