One of the first skills math learners should know is spelling numbers. Before they can do this, however, they need to know the alphabet. They should also be able to spell other three, four and five letter words from memory.
Below are the numbers one – ten spelled out. We can help learners by using R.C.R.C (Read, Cover, Recite, Check) to help them learn to spell numbers correctly.
one two three |
four five six |
seven eight nine ten |
Help the learner take a couple of numbers everyday and memorize them.
As we help the learner spell the numbers above we begin to help them associate the words to a value. So, when we have them spell the number, we have them point to, touch or show us an object with that value, too.
Below is a exercise that can help us do that.
one | |
two | |
three | |
four | |
five | |
six | |
seven | |
eight | |
nine | |
ten |
It may be helpful to use a scissors to cut these up and use them for practice.
